In following on from and in recognition of an age-old tradition of aphoristic thought propounded by philosophers and pundits alike, from Lao Tzu to George Bernard Shaw to Woody Allen, this book is intended as a revealingly refreshing collection of contemporary aphorisms by modern-day aphorists and thinkers from all walks of life and backgrounds. In essence, the book provides written proof that, in the fast paced world of today, the art (the very heart and substance) of the aphorism, and especially as a form of literary endeavour, is still very much alive.

Apart from their brevity, the most obvious characteristic of aphorisms is that they are generalizations, or terse observations that, ideally, offer up "comments on some recurrent aspect of life, couched in terms that are meant to be permanently and universally applicable". At their best, aphorisms present their reader with the chance of reflection and understanding, often opening doors of reflection and thought not to be so easily opened in other, perhaps less direct, ways.

This short collection of aphorisms is intended both as an educational delight and a revealing insight into the subtle art of the aphorism, as revealed in and through the work of many "aphorists" who, at their best, show a deep understanding of this ancient literary form. Hopefully, or for the most part, this aim can be said to have been achieved; this despite the fact that a fair number of these aphorisms have not been composed or coined by professed aphorists, or by people who see themselves primarily as aphorists (rather than poets or professional writers of some kind).

However, if some of these aphorisms have not always been forged by professed aphorists, in the main they have at least usually been composed by well-known celebrities and other notable people. (Although, for one or two examples, or, very occasionally, perhaps also by those bright sparks who, for a brief moment, have chosen to stand in the "professional" aphoristic wordsmith's stead, instead; people who are totally unknown in aphoristic circles, but whose aphoristic efforts have been included here purely on their merits as aphoristic thought.)

In rounding up, and what is perhaps more to the point, this book, with over 600 highly original aphorisms, purports to be a short but power-packed collection of some of the more interesting aphorisms of modern-day aphorists, whose work does not always see much airing in the literary world. While in being so, and perhaps more relevantly, this book, with over 600 uniquely original aphorisms, could also very easily be called a sort of "public open forum" for contemporary aphorists, laying out their work for the world to see: There are aphoristic insights aplenty to be found in this work; if he so wishes, to find them, its reader need only open it and enquire within.
