Without a doubt, football is the most important recreational activity in the world. And as such, there is a monstrously large machinery for the management of it and those hoping to make money from it.

Much of this machinery revolves around international football. Many would say that the young athletes cannot get exposure because sports officials are too focused on the money. Betters insist that all active participants in international sports are corrupt and that their corruption makes it impossible to guess the final results of football matches. Extensive investigation by the FBI in cooperation with European police has revealed that these claims may contain some truth. Almost all FIFA officials have found themselves in the epicenter of this investigation, accused of the most heinous crimes of sports, from taking bribes to match-fixing and the organization of big international competitions.

Some will say that everything comes down to politics; others claim that this kind of corruption happens all the time, in every industry. Politics has been interfering in the work of international sports organizations for a long time. One of the most recent examples is the admission of Kosovo to the International Olympic Committee. Even before their admission, FIFA allowed the Kosovo team to play friendly matches, but with additional conditions.

Samuel Huntington, one of the most important contemporary theorists, describes the "soft power" IOC and FIFA declare for themselves in terms of the Summer Olympic Games and the football World Cup. From the 1980s to the first half of the millennium, the Olympics were held in Los Angeles, Seoul, Barcelona, Atlanta, and Sydney. During that same time period, the football world championships were held in Italy, USA, France, Japan/South Korea, and Germany. For Huntington, these events indicate the dominance of Western powers over the rest of the world. Through the negotiation and influence of key international sports organizations, it was guaranteed that the majority of Olympic and FIFA events were allocated to countries in the West or their strategic partners in the Pacific region.

However, since the 2010s, things have started to change. The Olympic Games, were held in Beijing and London, and will next take place in Rio de Janeiro. As for the football mondial, since 2006 the final tournament has been held in South Africa and Brazil, and Russia and Qatar are next in line.

The West no longer has the majority. With each subsequent vote, it has suffered more and more pronounced defeats. The formation of an anti-Western coalition has been especially hard on the United States and Western European countries during the voting for 2018 and 2022 football world championships. First, Russia was chosen over opponents England and a combined Dutch-Belgian offer. Then, Qatar was given precedence over Australia, Japan, and the United States. These defeats were especially hard on European countries. The final tournament in football has always occurred on Western soil at least once every eight years. The last time that tournament happened on Western soil was in 2006; it will not happen again until at least 2022, and quite possibly later than that, as the most serious candidate for the host for 2026 is Australia.

The European reaction to this development has been public and intense. Soon after the victories of Russia and Qatar, the outcries of protest began. Germany has sought to review the decision, and the British media has reported that the United Kingdom has considered a boycott. The dispute arose again after the escalation of the Ukrainian crisis, causing demands that Russia resign its organization of the World Championships for 2018.

Other recent developments in FIFA also indicate a move away from Western dominance. Joseph Blatter won the vote, securing his fifth mandate as head of world football home, and then was promptly forced to resign the following day as the FBI....
