Introduction by Pico Iyer; With Salman Rushdie and Siddharth Dhanvant Shanghvi Sooni Taraporevala's photography provides a deeply personal insight into the people and landscape of Bombay/Mumbai. The photographs cross social boundaries between classes, convey a sense of the disjunction between the private and the public and capture a visual contrast that is predominantly candid, whether invited into homes, glamorous parties or on the streets. They provide a quirky yet affecting and intimate view of the social and political fabric that make up the Maximum City. About the Author Sooni Taraporevala is an Indian photographer, screenwriter and film-maker, best known for her screenplays for the films Mississippi Masala, The Namesake and the Oscar-nominated Salaam Bombay, amongst others. She wrote and directed the National Award-winning film Little Zizou. She was awarded the Padma Shri by the Government of India in 2014 and in 2017 was invited to be a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

Sooni Taraporevala's arresting photographs, cutting across class and community lines, are an insider's affectionate view of the city she considers home. Capturing life in Bombay/Mumbai from 1977 to the present day, the images - complex and intimate, quirky and quotidian - celebrate the odd and everyday character of a city as its shape shifted over four decades. With illuminating write-ups by Pico Iyer and Salman Rushdie, as well as a candid conversation between Taraporevala and Siddharth Dhanvant Shanghvi, the works in this book are a significant, original contribution to the social history of one of India's most diverse cities..
