Summary Of The Book Letters To A Young Architect is an autobiography of Christopher Benninger’s journey from America to India. It is a narrative on how architecture shaped him to be the man he is today and the experiences he had in his journey. The book is an amalgamation of his experiences that range from looking back at all that he has learned in architecture, modernism, issues in urban planning that plague India, probable solutions, till the time he was given the Great Master's Award. Benninger talks about the people he met beginning with Jose Luis Sert, whom he studied under, and moves on to Walter Gropius, Buckminster Fuller and Arnold Toynbee and the effect their passion for humanity had on other people. He talks about the places he visited and how his experiences changed him. He moves on to his style of architecture, describing in detail, features he looks to incorporate into his design like blending in local motifs and signs. He talks about linking indoor activities with external settings and creating designs that are compatible with Indian weather conditions. It is this blend of American principles and Asian styles that makes his style of architecture unique. He lays emphasis on coming up with designs that minimize power consumption during construction and maintenance, on using local materials and designing structures in a way that lends a unique identity to the place and its residents. Benninger expresses concern about the way architecture is being taught. He explains that he is a firm believer of student-teacher traditions, values and practices and pays tribute to Balkrishna Doshi as an example of the Guru-Shishya tradition in India. He also expresses concern about urbanism and urban planning in the development of a new society. Few of the chapters of the book are Poverty Alleviation in Cities, Omens of a Magic Gift, The Design of Design, In Search of Architecture, Looking Back and Forward, The Beautiful Velvet Box, The Challenge and the Response, Five Myths which Plague Urban India, and Back to Basics.
