Take a trip back to the past with George Mitchell as he explains the wonders of the architecture of Badami, Aihole and Pattadakal in this book. Summary of the Book In the Bagalkot district of Karnataka, there rest three unique locations for any traveller afflicted by wanderlust. First of these, Badami was once the capital of the Badami Chalukyas from 540 to 757 AD. In this idyllic landscape, in a ravine at the foot of the rugged, red sandstone outcrop that surrounds Agastya lake, one can find ancient temples cut into the rocks. Legend says that the sage Agastya killed the terrible asura Vatapi near this location, and the nearby areas boasted the most famous architectural achievements of the period. Badami, Aihole and Pattadakal boast some of the finest rock-cut monuments in India, and here, Jain and Hindu monuments come together in a great congress of Indian architecture, left unrivalled in their preservation and expressive nature for all time. About George Michell George Michell is an known authority on South Asian architecture and one of the best recognized graduates of the University of Melbourne. He obtained his PhD. From the School of Oriental and African Studies, the University of London, studying Indian Architecture. He co-directed the renaissance of the medieval Hindu ruins at Hampi-Vijayanagara, which is currently a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Dr. Michell has also written Brick Temples of Bengal, Where Kings and Gods Meet, The Penguin Guide to the Monuments of India: Volume 1 and City of Victory – Vijayanagara. In 1999, he received the Nadoja award, an Honorary Doctor of Letters, from the Kannada University at Hampi, Karnataka.

The town of Badami, the nearby villages of Aihole and Pattadakal and the pilgrimage site of Mahakuta, in the Malprabha valley of central Karnataka, are celebrated for their magnificent rock-cut shrines and structural temples. These Hindu and Jain monuments are associated with the Early Chalukyas who reigned over this part of the Deccan during the 6th–8th centuries. Together with a profusion of magnificent sculptures, mostly found in situ, these shrines and temples may be considered among the earliest, best preserved vestiges of temple art in India.

This guidebook, the first ever for the Badami region, is authored by a scholar whose PhD was on Early Chalukya architecture. The text is illustrated with regional and town maps, building plans and more than 130 splendid coloured photographs.
