The China Relief Expedition, an eight-nation military effort, was organized to rescue foreign nationals in the country during the Boxer Uprising (1899–1901). In Thirteen Months in China, Thakur Gadadhar Singh, a British Indian soldier of the 7th Rajput Regiment, recounts his experiences as he set sail along with his men for Beijing in the summer of 1900. Written shortly after his return to India in 1901, he details several aspects of China and its people he met over the course of thirteen months. Part travelogue, part history, Singh’s eyewitness account offers a first-hand view of the tumultuous events of the Boxer Uprising and its aftermath, as also of Chinese society, culture, politics, religion, and art and architecture, often in a comparative perspective. It is a rare historical source of an Indian subaltern’s outlook on the history of China, and its customs and practices. About the Author Anand A. Yang is professor of international studies and history and chair of the Department of History at the University of Washington, Seattle, USA. Kamal Sheel is professor of Chinese studies at Banaras Hindu University, India. Ranjana Sheel is professor of history at Banaras Hindu University, India.

This book is an annotated English translation of Gadadhar Singh's Cīn Me Terah Mās (1902), a stunning account, in Hindi, of his experiences in China as a soldier in the International Expedition-a multinational force of eight nations organized in the summer of 1900 to march on the capital city of Beijing, lift the siege of the Foreign Legations there, and defeat the insurgent Boxers and the Qing Empire that supported the movement. Written shortly after his return from Beijing, Singh details many aspects of China and its people he encountered in person over the course of thirteen months. Part travelogue, part history, his story of China offers an eyewitness account of the tumultuous events of the Boxer Uprising and its aftermath along with a remarkable close-up view of Chinese society, culture, politics, religion, art, and architecture, and other 'knowable and suitable subjects', from the perspective of an Indian subaltern.
